Clay Holmes looks to rebound in favorable Cubs home debut against St. Louis

Holmes experienced a rusty outing in his recent return, allowing four earned runs over four innings with just one strikeout. Newly acquired from the Mets after recovering from a fractured fibula, he immediately steps into the rotation for a 71-50 Cubs squad that has won three straight games. With multiple Chicago starters sidelined on the injured list, the Cubs need him to quickly find his groove.

Despite the bumpy recent appearance, Holmes has been sharp overall this season, carrying a 2.96 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 54.2 innings. Our models project him to stabilize around a 3.66 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, confirming that his recent stumble was merely post-injury rust rather than a skills collapse. His heavy sinker and ground-ball tendencies remain dependable assets for limiting damage.
