Clay Holmes takes steps toward mound work but remains weeks away from a return

Holmes hasn't seen game action since mid-May due to a fractured fibula, leaving a significant void in the rotation for a fifth-place Mets squad currently sitting at 35-49. Encouraging news emerged recently as he was cleared to resume throwing on flat ground at Citi Field with mound work scheduled for the coming week. He remains a key piece for the long term but is currently unavailable on the active roster.

Prior to the injury, Holmes was delivering elite production with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over nine starts, far exceeding our season projection of 3.66. His 2026 form was a notable step forward from his career baseline, though our models suggest a 1.30 WHIP is a more likely outcome over a full season. Given his high ground-ball rates, he should remain an effective ratio stabilizer once he regains his health.

With zero projected innings this week, Holmes is an obvious sit in all formats as he continues his recovery. The Mets have a full schedule against the Blue Jays and Braves, but Holmes will be watching from the sidelines while he builds back his arm strength. He should be held in IR slots in most competitive leagues given his top-tier performance earlier this year. Sit.
