David Peterson seeks consistency in the Cubs rotation following his move from New York

Peterson has shown flashes of potential since joining the second-place Cubs, posting a 1.80 ERA over five innings in his most recent outing. However, his 12.07 ERA and 2.20 WHIP over the last 14 days highlight the volatility that led to his mid-season trade from the Mets. He currently slots in as the number five starter for a Chicago club that is navigating a two-game win streak while managing several rotation injuries.

While his 6.70 ERA on the season is a major concern, our data suggests a significant rebound toward a 3.98 ERA for the remainder of the year. This optimism is fueled by a career-high groundball rate that should play much better behind a Cubs infield defense that is among the best in baseball. If he can lower his current 1.70 WHIP by limiting walks, he could rediscover the form that led to his successful 2024 campaign.
