Kenley Jansen remains locked into the closer role in Detroit despite recent ratio turbulence

Jansen has experienced some turbulence on the mound lately, posting an 8.44 ERA and 1.56 WHIP across 3.2 innings over the last 14 days. Despite the shaky ratios, the veteran right-hander secured his 16th save of the season with a sharp outing on August 17th and holds down the primary closer role for a fourth-place Tigers club (61-69) looking to snap a five-game slide.

Through 32 innings this season, Jansen holds a 4.50 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, which lag behind our season projection of a 3.66 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. While elevated walks have inflated his earned runs, his strikeout rate (11.25 K/9) remains strong enough to suggest his ratios will normalize closer to career norms down the stretch.

Detroit stays home for a six-game slate against Tampa Bay and the Dodgers, presenting multiple late-inning opportunities if the offense provides leads. With our models forecasting 1.4 saves and 2.6 strikeouts this week, the veteran reliever remains a trustworthy source for saves. Start.
