Elder struggles to find consistency as rotation injuries mount in Atlanta

Elder is currently navigating a difficult stretch for the first-place Braves, who lead the NL East with a 52-36 record. Over his last 30 days, he has struggled to a 9.45 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP, allowing 29 hits over just 20 innings of work. Despite these performance issues, his role as a staple in the rotation is secure given the team's thinning depth following the loss of Spencer Strider and the recent forearm injury to Martin Perez.

Looking under the hood, our data suggests regression toward his career norms is likely, as his recent inflated ratios sit well above his 4.12 ERA from earlier this season and our projection of 4.89. While he was lauded for his command and arsenal adjustments earlier in the year, his recent 1.80 WHIP indicates he is permitting far too much traffic to remain fantasy-viable in the short term. He needs to find the pinpoint command that earned him early-season accolades.

The week ahead features a road trip to Pittsburgh and St. Louis. With Martin Perez expected to hit the injured list, Elder will likely slot into a start against the Cardinals and Michael McGreevy, who enters with a strong 3.12 ERA. Facing a St. Louis team in a pitcher-friendly environment might help, but given that Elder has allowed 21 earned runs over his last four starts, the risk remains too high for standard mixed leagues.
