Foster Griffin emerges as a dominant staff anchor in Washington

Griffin has been nearly untouchable lately, posting a spectacular 1.12 ERA and 0.84 WHIP over his last five starts. His most recent outing was a masterpiece, striking out nine batters over seven innings without issuing a single walk. He has solidified his role as the number one starter for a fourth-place Nationals club that currently sits at 48-49. With primary rotation pieces like Josiah Gray and Mitchell Parker on the 60-day injured list, Griffin’s stability has become essential to the team's competitive efforts.

His performance this season is significantly outpacing our initial models, which expected a 4.17 ERA. Instead, Griffin has maintained a 2.80 ERA through 109.4 innings, supported by a career-high strikeout rate that was absent in his previous MLB stints. While his 10 wins already exceed most expectations, his refined arsenal—including a splitter he mastered in Japan—suggests that his current 1.02 WHIP is a sustainable reflection of his improved command rather than a temporary hot streak.

Following the All-Star break, the Nationals head to Oakland for a three-game series against the Athletics. Facing a 41-55 Athletics team provides an excellent opportunity for Griffin to keep his momentum going against one of the less productive lineups in the league.
