Seth Lugo faces significant ratio struggles as he settles back into the Royals rotation

Lugo has endured a difficult stretch lately, posting a 9.54 ERA and a 1.92 WHIP over his last 14 days while allowing 25 hits in just 15.1 innings. He currently slots in as a back-end starter for a fifth-place Royals team that sits at 38-55 and has struggled to gain ground in the AL Central. While he has successfully returned from a scary head injury suffered in June, his command and ability to limit hard contact have been inconsistent since returning to the mound.

His recent performance is a sharp departure from our season projection of a 3.96 ERA and his elite 2024 campaign where he won 16 games with a 3.09 ERA. The current inflated 1.45 season WHIP suggests he is leaving too many pitches over the heart of the plate, though his career-high 1.24 strikeout-per-inning rate this year indicates the raw stuff is still present. We expect a gradual move toward his career baselines, but the current high hit rate remains a concern for fantasy utility.

Lugo is a two-start pitcher this week, though his first outing on July 7 resulted in a massive ERA spike after surrendering nine hits in just 4.1 innings. He is scheduled to wrap up the week on July 12 against the Orioles and Shane Baz, who enters with a 4.21 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. Facing a potent Baltimore lineup on the road while currently struggling with his location makes him a high-risk option that could damage weekly ratios. Sit.
