Lucas Erceg | Fantasy Outlook

Lucas Erceg loses grip on high-leverage duties amid severe late-season struggles

Erceg has struggled mightily in recent outings, logging an 11.61 ERA and 4.52 WHIP with five walks across 3.1 innings over the last 30 days. The fifth-place Royals (62-76) have moved away from utilizing the right-hander in save situations, turning ninth-inning opportunities over to Steven Cruz while Erceg works through severe command problems in lower-leverage relief.

The steep drop-off is no fluke, as Erceg carries a bloated 6.70 ERA and 2.03 WHIP across 40.3 innings this year, starkly trailing our projected 3.71 ERA. His strikeout-to-walk ratio has cratered compared to previous seasons, issuing 29 walks against just 31 strikeouts, which severely limits any path to a rest-of-season turnaround.

Kansas City stays home for six games this week against Miami and Toronto, but our projections forecast Erceg for minimal volume and virtually no save chances. Without closing duties or ratio security, he belongs on fantasy benches or waiver wires. Sit.
