Carter Jensen looks to snap a cold spell as the primary backstop in Kansas City

Jensen has hit a wall over the last week, going hitless with eight strikeouts in his last four games. He remains the primary catcher for a fifth-place Royals squad that currently sits at 38-59 and is mired in a five-game losing streak. Despite the recent slump, he continues to hold down the top spot behind the plate and provides versatility for the lineup when slotting in as the designated hitter.

The current .147 average over the last 14 days is a sharp decline from the elite form that saw him post a 20-game hitting streak earlier this summer. Our data suggests he will likely settle closer to his season baseline of a .236 batting average and 13 home runs. Given his breakout earlier this season and his consistent role, this recent stretch appears to be a standard mid-season adjustment period for the young catcher.

The Royals have a three-game home stand against the Padres coming up this weekend. While Michael King and his 3.40 ERA present a difficult matchup on Friday, Jensen should find plenty of opportunities against Griffin Canning and German Marquez, who carry ERAs of 6.75 and 5.18, respectively. Because he faces two pitchers with high WHIPs and elevated ERAs, he is a strong candidate to bounce back. Start.
