Sidelined by Elbow Setback, Ragans Remains an Important Fantasy Hold
Cole Ragans remains sidelined on the injured list after experiencing a discouraging setback during his late-May rehab assignment. The left-hander was shut down after his throwing elbow did not bounce back well, leaving him without an official appearance since early May. His continued absence is a major blow to the fourth-place Royals, who sport a 27-39 record and are currently navigating several rotation injuries, including Kris Bubic and Alec Marsh.
Before landing on the shelf, Ragans had some trouble with a 4.97 ERA and 1.45 WHIP over eight starts, though his immense upside remained visible via 45 strikeouts in 34.4 innings. Our long-term models still heavily buy into his talent, projecting a strong 3.47 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 165 strikeouts over 153.0 innings once healthy. Given his proven capability to generate elite whiff rates, fantasy managers should preach patience and keep him stashed rather than letting him slip to the waiver wire.
With a blank projection for the upcoming cycle, Ragans will remain inactive as Kansas City plays home series against the Rangers and Astros. Keep him tucked away on your injured list or bench until the team provides a timeline for his return to throwing. Verdict: Sit.
