Spencer Arrighetti looks to find his footing following a difficult stretch in the Houston rotation

Arrighetti has struggled immensely of late, posting an 8.10 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over his last 10 innings. The third-place Astros, currently 47-51, have relied on him heavily due to rotation injuries to Ronel Blanco and Mike Burrows, but he has allowed 16 earned runs over his last four starts. He remains a fixture as the number four starter for a club currently sitting 1.5 games back in the Wild Card race.

While his historic start to the year suggested a breakout, his current 4.54 ERA is now nearly identical to our season projection of 4.60. His career 1.46 WHIP and recent command issues indicate that his early-season dominance was likely an outlier. Fantasy managers should view him as a high-strikeout, high-risk option rather than the ratio stabilizer he appeared to be during his award-winning month of May.

The Astros face a tough three-game home series against the Orioles beginning July 17. Given that Arrighetti has surrendered eight earned runs in two of his last three outings, he is a dangerous play against a potent Baltimore lineup that can exploit his recent lack of command. Until he demonstrates improved control and limits the hard contact that has plagued him in July, he is best left on the bench. Sit.
