Varland enters the All-Star break as a dominant, elite closing option

Varland has been virtually untouchable lately, posting a 2.25 ERA over his last 14 days to bring his season-long mark to a stellar 1.38. He is the primary closer for the fifth-place Blue Jays, who currently sit at 45-51 in the AL East. His dominant first half, which includes a perfect 19-for-19 mark in save opportunities, recently earned him his first career All-Star Game selection as the clear anchor of the Toronto bullpen.

His current production is significantly outperforming our model's conservative preseason projection of a 4.16 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. Under the hood, his 13.25 K/9 rate and 5.15 strikeout-to-walk ratio suggest this breakout is entirely sustainable rather than a fluke. While the Blue Jays have struggled as a team, Varland’s emergence as one of the best relievers in baseball provides a high floor for fantasy managers needing ratio protection and saves.

Toronto has a light schedule coming out of the break with a three-game home set against the White Sox starting Friday. Chicago's lineup presents a favorable matchup for high-strikeout arms, and our weekly projection anticipates roughly four innings of work with a high probability for a save.
