Daniel Palencia searches for command in middle relief following multiple IL stints

Palencia has struggled to regain his rhythm since his latest return from the injured list, surrendering four earned runs over 2.2 innings in his last three appearances. The right-hander is currently slotted in middle relief for a 77-60 Cubs team holding the top National League Wild Card spot. With high-leverage chances going elsewhere, Chicago is cautious with his workload.

His 4.58 ERA and 1.53 WHIP on the year sit well above his 3.22 ERA from 2025, though his 12.2 K/9 proves the explosive fastball remains intact. Our models project him to stabilize near a 3.82 ERA once his mechanics align, but repeated arm issues have clearly disrupted his consistency. Until he strings together clean outings and earns trust in late-game situations, he remains a volatile asset.

Chicago faces a demanding seven-game slate this week, opening with four home games against the first-place Brewers before heading on the road to battle Miami. With limited opportunities for saves or holds and lingering ratio concerns, Palencia should remain on the bench in standard leagues. Sit.
