A.J. Ewing catches fire down the stretch as New York's everyday center fielder

Ewing is finishing his rookie campaign on a tear, batting .367 with two home runs and a pair of steals over his last 14 days. Entrenched as the everyday starter in center field, the 22-year-old has provided a major spark for a fifth-place Mets squad sitting at 71-85. His refined approach and standout defense have solidified regular at-bats heading into the final stretch.

While his recent .367 surge will inevitably regress toward his .257 baseline, his speed is entirely legitimate after racking up 24 stolen bases on the year. Ewing endured an extended midsummer slump, but his recent quality contact shows he has adjusted well to big-league pitching. Even with strikeout volatility, his base-stealing ability ensures a high categorical floor.

The Mets embark on a six-game road trip through Texas and Washington, presenting several enticing opportunities. Ewing should capitalize against vulnerable starters like MacKenzie Gore (4.74 ERA, 1.37 WHIP) and Jake Irvin (5.31 ERA), with our projection calling for three runs and another stolen base. Start.
