Ildemaro Vargas shows signs of recovery following a difficult June slump

Vargas has stabilized recently, batting .278 over his last five games after a difficult month of June where he struggled with a .148 average. The third-place Diamondbacks currently hold a 45-47 record and are looking to snap a two-game losing streak. Despite a scary collision earlier this season, he is fully healthy and remains the everyday starter at first base for an Arizona lineup missing several key pieces to injury.

Under the hood, this season has been a tale of extremes for the veteran. After earning NL Player of the Month honors in April and setting a Venezuelan-born record with a 27-game hitting streak, his production regressed significantly toward his career baselines. Our models suggest his early-season power surge was an outlier, and fantasy managers should expect him to settle in as a contact-first hitter with modest RBI potential rather than an elite slugger.

The remainder of the week offers a difficult road test, starting with a favorable matchup today against Griffin Canning and his 6.71 ERA. However, the Diamondbacks then face a powerhouse Dodgers rotation, including an elite challenge against Yoshinobu Yamamoto and his 2.49 ERA. Given the looming matchups and our projection of a .170 average for the rest of the week, it is best to keep him on the bench. Sit.
