Jorge Mateo sees increased opportunity in Atlanta following Ha-Seong Kim's injury

Mateo has struggled at the plate recently, batting just .100 over his last 14 days with no home runs. However, his fantasy relevance has spiked as he has taken over as the primary shortstop for the first-place Braves, who currently lead the NL East with a 52-36 record. This increased playing time comes in the wake of Ha-Seong Kim landing on the injured list with finger inflammation, securing Mateo's place in the lineup for the immediate future.

While his recent 18-game stretch has been underwhelming, our data suggests his current .248 season average is more indicative of his true talent level than his recent cold streak. He remains a high-end speed asset, having stolen two bases in limited opportunities over the last two weeks, which aligns with our season projection that expects double-digit steals. Though he won't replicate the power he showed in May, his career baseline suggests his batting average should stabilize closer to the .225 mark.

The Braves have a full seven-game slate this week, including a three-game set against the Pirates and three against the Cardinals. Mateo faces several favorable matchups against pitchers like Jared Jones and Matthew Liberatore, both of whom carry ERAs north of 5.25. While he does have a difficult date with Paul Skenes on Tuesday, the volume of games and the chance to run against vulnerable rotations make him an excellent target for managers needing stolen bases.
