Rico Garcia assumes closing duties for the Orioles despite a difficult recent stretch of performance

Garcia has struggled significantly of late, posting a 7.57 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over his last 30 days as the fifth-place Orioles (42-51) currently endure a three-game losing streak. Despite this poor form, he has moved into the primary closer role with Ryan Helsley sidelined on the 15-day injured list due to elbow discomfort. Our models currently see him as the number-one option in the ninth inning, though his habit of allowing at least one run in five of his last eight appearances makes him a high-wire act for fantasy managers.

Under the hood, Garcia appears to be regressing toward the mean after a historic start to the season where he didn't allow a hit through his first 10 innings. While his season-long 3.09 ERA remains respectable, it is steadily climbing toward our season projection of 4.50 as his hits-per-nine rate normalizes. His 10.83 K/9 rate remains an elite asset, but his increased vulnerability to the long ball since mid-May indicates that his early-season dominance is likely a thing of the past.

The remainder of the week features a final game against the Cubs followed by a three-game series against the Royals. Baltimore will face several vulnerable starters with high ratios, including David Peterson and his 6.96 ERA, which should provide plenty of late-inning leads for the bullpen to protect. Because save opportunities are so valuable in fantasy, you should continue to roster him as long as he is the primary ninth-inning choice, even if his recent 1.25 WHIP over the last week suggests some ratio risk. Start.
