Kerry Carpenter’s power potential is overshadowed by a brutal July slump

Carpenter is currently mired in a deep slump, going hitless over his last four games and managing just a .091 batting average over the last 14 days. Despite the cold stretch, he continues to serve as the everyday right fielder for a fourth-place Tigers squad that currently holds a 44-52 record and is looking to snap a two-game losing streak. He has remained healthy following minor shoulder issues earlier in the year, maintaining his clear hold on a middle-of-the-order role.

Under the hood, the power remains legitimate even if the contact has vanished, as his 13 home runs in 73 games have already reached the total we expected in our season-long models. His current .222 batting average is a significant departure from his career .250+ baseline, suggesting some positive regression is likely once his luck on balls in play turns around. While the strikeouts have ticked up recently, his .458 slugging percentage indicates he still possesses the game-changing strength that made him a breakout candidate.

The Tigers face a short three-game slate to close the week with a road trip to Anaheim to face the Angels. While the Angels' rotation offers some favorable matchups, the limited volume of games combined with Carpenter’s recent 2-for-22 skid makes him a risky play in most standard formats. With a projected .190 average for the remainder of the week and limited counting stat opportunities over just three games, fantasy managers should look for more productive alternatives until he finds his rhythm.
