Drew Anderson provides strikeout depth despite recent ratio volatility

Anderson has struggled with consistency lately, surrendering a 10.19 ERA and a 1.89 WHIP over his last 14 days of work. He currently serves as a secondary long-relief option for a fourth-place Tigers squad that sits at 40-50 in the AL Central standings. While he has occasionally been pushed into high-leverage or extra-inning situations due to injuries to teammates like Will Vest, his primary role remains providing multi-inning coverage when the rotation falters.

His recent blow-up is a significant departure from his season-long 4.84 ERA and 1.47 WHIP, but the underlying swing-and-miss stuff remains elite. With a 12.30 K/9 rate through 32 appearances this year, his ability to generate strikeouts far exceeds his career norms and suggests he can still be an asset in deeper formats. Expect his ratios to regress toward our season projection of a 4.18 ERA as the luck on balls in play stabilizes.

Detroit faces a six-game home stand this week against the Athletics and Phillies. The early-week matchups against Oakland are favorable, as the Tigers will face starters like Jeffrey Springs and Jack Perkins who carry ERAs north of 5.90. However, the weekend set against Philadelphia aces Cristopher Sanchez and Zack Wheeler is much more difficult for the bullpen to navigate. Given his current role and recent performance, he is not a reliable source of holds or saves. Sit.
