Zach McKinstry shows signs of life in limited action, but remains a fantasy bench option

McKinstry has caught fire over the last week, batting .385 with a .500 on-base percentage over four games. However, his playing time remains inconsistent as he serves as a utility backup for the last-place Tigers, who sit fifth in the AL Central. Even with Javier Baez sidelined on the injured list, McKinstry is firmly behind Hao-Yu Lee on the depth chart.

While his recent hot streak is encouraging, McKinstry’s prior 30-day stretch yielded a dismal .183 batting average. Our models project a rest-of-season average of .235 with modest power and speed chip-ins (7 HR, 9 SB), which aligns with his career baselines. Expect regression toward these modest benchmarks once his current surge cools down.

Looking at the remaining slate, Detroit faces Zebby Matthews before heading to Cleveland to battle Tanner Bibee, Joey Cantillo, and Gavin Williams (3.32 ERA). Cantillo (4.84 ERA) offers an exploitable matchup, but McKinstry's lack of guaranteed everyday at-bats makes him too risky to trust. Verdict: Sit.
