Tatsuya Imai thrives in bullpen role but carries minimal fantasy value without guaranteed starts

Imai has rebounded impressively in lower-leverage work, firing six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and a 0.83 WHIP over his last 14 days. Following earlier rotation struggles that pushed his ERA to 5.57, Houston transitioned the right-hander into a long-relief role for the first-place Astros (63-62). While his recent swing-and-miss stuff has looked sharp, his path back to regular starting assignments remains blocked.

Under the hood, Imai's 11.7 K/9 showcases the electric upside reflected in our models, but a 1.55 WHIP and 42 walks across 61.4 innings reveal ongoing command hurdles. Our projections initially targeted a 3.85 ERA over a full starter workload, yet poor efficiency prevented him from pitching deep into starts. His recent scoreless relief stretch is a positive sign, but the lack of volume caps his upside.
