Tatsuya Imai's elite strikeout upside is currently overshadowed by extreme volatility and early exits
Imai’s tenure in the rotation remains a volatile experience for fantasy managers. The third-place Astros (43-46) currently rely on him as their number three starter, but his results have been wild; over his last 14 days, he has racked up 23 strikeouts in just 13.1 innings, yet a disastrous 1.1-inning blowup against the Twins on July 1 saw him surrender five runs and five walks. This continues a troubling trend where he has failed to complete three innings in one-third of his major-league starts this year.
Under the hood, the divergence between his elite stuff and his actual results is staggering. While our models project a 3.85 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP for the rest of the season, his current career 6.46 ERA reflects a steep big-league learning curve. His 15.80 K/9 over the last two weeks is league-leading, but it is negated by a 1.54 WHIP that keeps him in constant trouble. Until he limits the hard contact and stabilizes his command, his season-long projections remain an optimistic ceiling rather than a sustainable reality.
Looking at the remaining schedule for the week, the Astros host the first-place Rays for a three-game set starting July 3. Since Imai just pitched on Wednesday, he will not see the mound again this week. Facing a Rays staff that features dominant arms like Nick Martinez (2.66 ERA) and Drew Rasmussen (2.45 ERA), the Astros will need stability they aren't currently getting from the right-hander. Given his recent implosion and high ratio risk, he should remain on fantasy benches until his mechanics improve. Sit.
