Tatsuya Imai | Fantasy Outlook

Tatsuya Imai relegated to low-leverage relief as turbulent rookie campaign ends

Imai has delivered solid relief results lately, logging five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts over his last 14 days. However, his usage remains sporadic for an Astros club sitting second in the AL West at 77-79 and trying to snap a three-game skid. Demoted from the rotation following midsummer command troubles, he now works strictly in low-leverage, multi-inning relief.

While his recent strikeout marks impress, this brief resurgence masks a turbulent rookie year defined by a 5.22 ERA and 1.51 WHIP over 72.4 innings. That production fell well shy of our projected 3.85 ERA. Despite enticing bat-missing ability, walking 51 batters in limited action proves his control issues are unsustainable for regular fantasy trust.

Houston finishes its schedule on the road against Seattle and the Athletics, and Imai is not slated for any starts this week. With the Astros turning to their regular rotation options, any appearances will come in irregular middle relief where wins and holds are nonexistent. Leave him on waivers to conclude the season. Sit.
