Yainer Diaz provides a power spark for Houston following a successful return from the injured list

Diaz has found his rhythm lately, launching two home runs with four RBIs and a 1.000 OPS over his last four games. He is currently splitting time behind the plate and at designated hitter for an Astros team that sits third in the AL West with a 46-49 record and is looking to snap a recent losing skid. Despite Christian Vázquez serving as the primary starter at catcher, Diaz remains a vital part of the lineup, especially with teammates like Jeremy Peña and Carlos Correa currently sidelined on the injured list.

While his .248 average on the year is a step back from his career-best .299 mark in 2024, his recent power surge aligns with our projection of 14 home runs and 67 RBIs. The low walk rate remains a concern for his on-base percentage, but his elite .733 slugging percentage over the past week suggests he is recapturing the form that saw him hit 20 long balls last season. We expect his batting average to stabilize closer to his .270 season projection as his contact rates normalize over the summer.

The Astros conclude their week with a three-game road series against the division-rival Rangers. Diaz faces a challenging slate of pitchers to end the week, starting with Cal Quantrill and his solid 3.35 ERA, followed by the high-upside Kumar Rocker. The series concludes against Jacob deGrom, who boasts a dominant 1.01 WHIP and remains one of the toughest matchups in the league. However, given Diaz's recent home run production and Houston's need for his bat in the heart of the order, he remains a top-tier catching option. Start.
