Andrew Alvarez is riding a sparkling scoreless streak into a dangerous road matchup against the Dodgers

Alvarez has been in top form lately, posting a 2.37 ERA and 17 strikeouts across 15.2 innings over his last 14 days, capped by six shutout frames against the Marlins. With injuries gutting Washington's rotation, the 27-year-old southpaw has firmly established himself as the number two starter for a 67-75 Nationals squad trying to finish strong in fourth place.

While his sparkling 2.47 ERA across his last five starts has been a boon, our models anticipate regression toward his projected 4.42 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. Alvarez has missed bats at a healthy clip this season with 86 strikeouts in 86.7 innings, but recurring bouts of wildness and a 1.36 season WHIP suggest his recent run of limiting damage is due to level off.

Alvarez is slated for just one outing this week, taking the mound on Sunday in Los Angeles to face the NL West-leading Dodgers. Traveling to face a powerhouse Dodgers lineup that has scored 684 runs is arguably his toughest test yet, negating much of his streaming appeal despite the recent momentum.
