Andrew Alvarez is struggling with command and ratios in a volatile swingman role

Alvarez has struggled significantly of late, yielding a 10.00 ERA and 1.94 WHIP over his last two appearances spanning 7.2 innings. The fourth-place Nationals, currently sitting at 48-49 and enduring a three-game losing streak, are utilizing him as the fifth starter in a rotation thinned by several long-term injuries. While recent team activity indicates he has warmed up for mid-game relief work, he remains a key part of the active pitching staff during Miles Mikolas's suspension.

Under the hood, his current 4.22 ERA and 1.49 WHIP are largely in line with our season projection of a 4.42 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. While he is missing bats at a high clip with over 10 strikeouts per nine innings, his recent lack of control—issuing six walks in his last 14 days—suggests he is currently over-extended. Fantasy managers should expect his ratios to remain volatile until he can better harness his fastball, which has shown occasional velocity dips.

Looking ahead, the Nationals have a three-game road series against the Athletics starting Friday. While the matchup against a bottom-tier Oakland offense is theoretically favorable, Alvarez is not currently scheduled for a confirmed start and has been used in unconventional bulk relief roles lately. Given his current form and the uncertainty of his usage patterns for the remainder of this week, he is too risky for active lineups. Sit.
