Pete Fairbanks | Fantasy Outlook

Pete Fairbanks remains the primary closing option for the Marlins despite recent ratio volatility

Fairbanks has struggled with consistency recently, posting a 6.75 ERA and 1.75 WHIP over his last 14 days of work. Despite these inflated numbers, he remains the primary closer for a third-place Marlins squad that currently holds a 52-45 record and remains competitive in the Wild Card race. While he surrendered a late home run in his most recent outing, his role is more secure than ever given that teammates Ronny Henriquez and John King are both sidelined on the injured list.

His current 7.17 season ERA is a far cry from our model's projection of 3.43, suggesting a period of significant underperformance relative to his career baseline. However, his elite strikeout rate remains intact at 12.39 K/9, which is actually higher than his 2024 and 2025 marks. We expect the ratios to normalize toward his projected 1.18 WHIP as long as he continues to generate whiffs at this elite frequency, making his current slump a likely outlier.

The Marlins travel to Milwaukee this weekend for a three-game series against the first-place Brewers. Fairbanks is projected for roughly 3.1 innings of work and at least one save opportunity during the road trip. While the Brewers' offense is formidable, Fairbanks' status as the top high-leverage arm in the Miami bullpen makes him an essential play for those chasing saves, provided you can stomach the recent ratio risk.
