Matthew Boyd stabilizes the rotation as a reliable post-injury asset

Boyd has looked sharp since returning from meniscus surgery, posting a 2.98 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP over his last two starts. He currently serves as the number two starter for a second-place Chicago Cubs squad that holds a 54-42 record and remains firmly in the postseason hunt. Despite a significant amount of team injuries impacting the rotation depth, including the loss of several key starters, Boyd's health and recent form have provided much-needed stability.

While his season-long 4.72 ERA is still recovering from early-season struggles, his underlying metrics suggest his recent success is sustainable. His 9.64 K/9 rate is a significant asset, and his current trajectory aligns closely with our season projection of a 3.82 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. After a career-best 2025 campaign, Boyd appears to be reclaiming his form as a high-floor starter who can suppress hits while maintaining a healthy strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The week ahead features a single start for Boyd on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins. Our models expect a strong performance with a projected 2.59 ERA and nearly five strikeouts for the outing. Since the Cubs are playing at home and Boyd is coming off a quality performance, he is a confident lineup choice.
