Fernando Cruz | Fantasy Outlook

High-strikeout setup man Fernando Cruz continues to dominate in late-innings for the first-place Yankees

Cruz has been outstanding for the first-place Yankees (43-27) over his last 14 days, posting a 1.64 ERA with 10 strikeouts in 5.5 innings. He is currently locked into the primary setup role for New York. Despite key team injuries to sluggers like Aaron Judge, the Yankees continue to lean heavily on Cruz to bridge the gap to closer David Bednar.

Cruz's strong 2.69 ERA this season is backed by an elite strikeout rate, but his 1.67 season WHIP indicates walk-rate trouble. Our models project some regression to a 3.69 ERA rest-of-season, but suggest his WHIP will stabilize around a much cleaner 1.23. He remains a highly productive holds source, but carries minor ratio risk.

The Yankees play six home games this week against the White Sox and Reds. Our data projects Cruz for 2.1 innings of work with 3.4 strikeouts and a stellar 1.93 ERA. Given New York's strong position, he should see plenty of high-leverage holds opportunities. Verdict: Start.
