Austin Wells | Fantasy Outlook

Austin Wells provides late-season pop for the Yankees down the stretch

Wells has provided a timely boost for the second-place Yankees (89-66), posting three home runs and an .851 OPS over his last 14 days. As New York’s everyday catcher, his playing time is completely secure, particularly with Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the injured list. Even with the club dropping two straight, Wells remains an essential source of power in a thinned lineup.

While Wells is batting only .186 through 119 games this year, his recent power surge is legitimate after hitting 21 homers last season. Our models project his talent closer to a .227 average, and five home runs over the last 30 days confirm he is seeing the ball well. Expect low batting averages to persist, but the power output is sustainable.

The Yankees play seven home games this week, beginning with tough Tampa Bay starters Drew Rasmussen (2.72 ERA) and Nick Martinez (2.98 ERA). Matchups ease later against Ian Seymour (4.55 ERA) and Baltimore's Shane Baz (4.17 ERA). With seven games in the Bronx and catcher eligibility, he is a high-upside play. Start.
