Austin Wells | Fantasy Outlook

Austin Wells surges in the second half to provide strong catcher value

Wells has caught fire at the plate, slashing .310/.355/.517 with a home run over his last 14 days and posting a strong .870 OPS across his last 30 games. Firmly entrenched as the everyday starting catcher for the second-place Yankees (69-55), his offensive surge is providing a vital spark for a lineup currently missing sluggers Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger.

His disappointing .179 full-season batting average is heavily depressed by a brutal early-season slump, but this second-half turnaround represents genuine growth rather than a lucky streak. After slugging 21 home runs a year ago, his renewed plate discipline and hard contact demonstrate that he is progressing back toward our baseline rest-of-season projections.

The Yankees embark on a six-game week, opening with a very favorable road series against Baltimore where Wells will take cuts against Shane Baz (4.01 ERA) and Chris Bassitt (5.11 ERA, 1.62 WHIP). A weekend home series against Toronto brings a stiff test versus Dylan Cease (2.46 ERA), but his volume and current form make him an easy lineup choice. Start.
