Ben Rice aims to rediscover his MVP-caliber power amid a significant cold spell

Rice has hit a wall lately, slashing a meager .074 over the last seven days without a home run or RBI. Despite this slump, he remains the primary designated hitter for a second-place Yankees team that currently holds a 48-35 record but is reeling from a four-game losing streak. His role in the heart of the order is more secure than ever given the extensive injury list that currently includes stars Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Ryan McMahon.

While the recent drop in production is concerning, it follows a blistering stretch where Rice launched 22 homers in just 78 games. His current .272 average is still slightly above our .244 season projection, suggesting some natural regression was inevitable after his torrid May and early June performances. His elite ability to handle high-velocity pitching remains a key underlying metric, and his career track record suggests the power will resurface as he adjusts to the league's updated scouting reports.

The Yankees play six games at home this week, though the early matchups are daunting against Detroit. Rice faces Casey Mize (3.07 ERA) and the elite Tarik Skubal (0.99 WHIP) before taking on Troy Melton and his stingy 2.39 ERA. The schedule lightens up significantly over the weekend against Minnesota, featuring Mike Paredes (4.26 ERA) and Connor Prielipp (4.96 ERA).
