Ian Happ | Fantasy Outlook

Ian Happ's milestone-filled season provides elite power and runs despite a cooling batting average

Happ continues his role as the primary starter in left field for a surging Cubs squad that enters the weekend on a five-game win streak, sitting second in the NL Central at 49-38. While he recently made history by tying Hack Wilson for 11th on the franchise home run list, his bat has cooled significantly, posting a meager .154 average with 12 strikeouts over the last seven days. Despite the hit to his batting average, he has remained active on the basepaths, scoring five runs in that span.

His current .223 season average is a slight concern, but his 17 home runs through the first half of the season suggest he is on pace to easily bypass our season projection of 18 long balls. While he is currently striking out at a high clip, his .332 on-base percentage and career history of drawing walks keep his fantasy floor stable in points leagues. This current slump appears to be a standard mid-season lull for a player who traditionally provides elite counting stats even when the hits aren't falling.

Looking at the remainder of the week, the Cubs face a three-game home set against St. Louis. Happ draws favorable matchups against Andre Pallante (3.93 ERA) and Kyle Leahy (4.09 ERA) before closing the series against Matthew Liberatore, who struggles with a 5.49 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. Given these high-ERA opponents and Happ's recent power milestones, he remains a strong play in all formats. Start.
