Paul Goldschmidt provides elite power upside despite a recent contact-rate slump

The veteran first baseman is navigating a significant cold spell at the plate, hitting just .083 over his last 14 days with 16 strikeouts. Despite the lack of contact, his role as the everyday starter at first base is secure for a second-place Yankees squad that currently holds a 54-42 record and a four-game winning streak. His presence in the middle of the order is even more vital given the current absences of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton from the lineup.

Under the hood, the underlying power remains impressive as he has launched seven home runs over his last 25 games, already eclipsing his total home run output from last season. While his recent .215 batting average over the last month is a concern, it aligns closely with our models' expected .259 seasonal mark. Given his track record of high-level production and elite 16-year experience, this current strikeout-heavy stretch appears to be a temporary outlier rather than a permanent decline.

The Yankees have a light schedule this week with only three games on the slate, a home series against the Dodgers beginning on July 17th. While our models project him to add to his 15 home runs during this set, the lack of volume makes him a difficult play in weekly formats.
