Marcus Semien | Fantasy Outlook

Marcus Semien remains sidelined with a severe hip flexor strain

Semien is currently on the 10-day injured list after suffering a Grade 3 left hip flexor strain in late June. The 35-year-old veteran is expected to be out at least through late July, a significant loss for a fifth-place Mets squad currently sitting at 39-54 in the NL East. With Semien sidelined, the team has shifted Brett Baty and Bo Bichette into primary roles across the middle infield to cover the vacancy.

Prior to the injury, Semien was enduring a brutal stretch, slashing just .164/.246/.255 over his last 15 games. His current season-long .214 batting average is a far cry from the .271 mark he posted in 2023, and our data suggests he was significantly underperforming his expected power output before landing on the shelf. While his track record suggests an eventual rebound, his age and the severity of the hip strain make him a high-risk asset for the second half.

The Mets continue their current homestand this week with matchups against the Royals and Red Sox, but fantasy managers will need to look elsewhere for production. New York's hitters face a tough slate against Michael Wacha and Sonny Gray, the latter of whom carries a dominant 2.61 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. Given that Semien is still several weeks away from a potential return, he should remain stashed on your IL or bench. Sit.
