Nolan McLean emerges as a high-strikeout force amid NL Rookie of the Year buzz
McLean has been phenomenal over the last 30 days, posting a 2.79 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP while fanning 36 batters in 29 innings. The fifth-place Mets (36-51) currently slot him as the number two starter in the rotation, a vital role given the team's lengthy injury list including Marcus Semien and Luis Robert Jr. His recent gem against Cincinnati and his ability to generate elite spin have solidified his status as a frontrunner for the NL Rookie of the Year award.
While his season ERA currently sits at 3.84, his recent performance is trending closer to our 3.46 season projection. His strikeout rate remains elite at 10.85 K/9, and he has significantly reduced the hard contact that plagued a brief rough patch in May. Given his record-breaking movement on his sweeper and improved base runner prevention, this recent dominance appears to be a sustainable breakout for the young right-hander rather than a temporary hot streak.
In the midst of a two-start week, McLean already silenced Toronto on June 30th with six scoreless innings and seven strikeouts. He is scheduled to wrap up the week on July 5th in a road matchup against the first-place Braves. While facing Martin Perez (3.27 ERA) and a potent Atlanta lineup is a significant challenge, McLean's massive strikeout upside and current momentum make him a mandatory play in all fantasy formats. Start.
