Jonah Tong dominates at Triple-A as a potential September call-up looms for the Mets
Tong has not pitched in the majors recently, but he has been dominant at Triple-A Syracuse with a 0.84 ERA over his past four starts, including a near no-hitter. With the fifth-place Mets sitting at 61-76 and out of postseason contention, September roster expansion offers an ideal opening for the 23-year-old top pitching prospect.
In his brief big-league action this season, Tong recorded a 3.87 ERA over 9.3 innings, though command remains a hurdle after yielding seven walks. Our projections anticipate a 3.48 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 31.0 frames with elite swing-and-miss stuff. If he captures regular starts down the stretch, his strikeout upside offers legitimate late-season fantasy intrigue.
New York takes on Tampa Bay and San Francisco this week, but Tong is not currently lined up for a start as Robert Stock and Sean Manaea remain in the rotation. Keep Tong stashed on benches or firmly on your watch list until his promotion and starting assignment become official. Sit.
