Steven Kwan | Fantasy Outlook

Steven Kwan’s elite contact skills have vanished as he posts historically low exit velocities during a prolonged slump

Over the last 14 days, Kwan is hitting just .243 with zero home runs and no stolen bases. The second-place Guardians, currently sitting at 45-42 and just one game back in the AL Central, desperately need more from their leadoff man with star Jose Ramirez sidelined by a wrist injury. Despite the offensive struggles, Kwan remains a fixture in the lineup as the everyday center fielder and continues to provide gold-glove caliber defense.

Our models projected a .276 average for Kwan this season, but his current .214 mark is a massive disappointment compared to his career baseline. Recent analysis has highlighted that he is currently posting the lowest hard-hit rate in the Statcast era, suggesting that while he was never a power hitter, his quality of contact has reached a concerning floor. Fantasy managers should expect some positive regression toward his career norms, but the lack of underlying punch makes a full recovery difficult in the short term.

Cleveland finishes the week with four games against the division-rival White Sox. The matchups are a mixed bag; he faces a tough Davis Martin and his 3.00 ERA today but gets more vulnerable targets in Anthony Kay (4.64 ERA) and Erick Fedde (4.54 ERA) over the weekend. Because Kwan is providing almost no counting stats or speed while his batting average is a liability, he is difficult to trust in standard leagues right now. Sit.
