Travis Bazzana enters the mid-summer stretch as an All-Star cornerstone for the first-place Guardians

The recently named All-Star serves as the everyday second baseman for a Cleveland squad that leads the AL Central with a 51-46 record and a four-game winning streak. While Bazzana has cooled off with a .200 average over his last 14 days, his role remains vital with star third baseman Jose Ramirez currently sidelined. The rookie has provided a consistent spark since his call-up, tallying 30 runs and 13 stolen bases through his first 65 games in the majors.

Under the hood, Bazzana’s recent struggles, including a .215 mark over the last 30 days, suggest he is hitting a rookie wall compared to our season projection of a .275 batting average. However, his plate discipline remains excellent for a 23-year-old, as evidenced by his 32 walks and 13 stolen bases which align with his high-upside speed profile. Despite the recent dip in batting average, his underlying exit velocities and pedigree as a former top pick indicate he is due for positive regression.

The Guardians finish the week with a three-game home stand against the Pirates starting Friday. It is a difficult stretch for hitters, as Bazzana is scheduled to face Jared Jones and the elite Paul Skenes, who enters with a dominant 1.02 WHIP and 3.57 ERA. With only three games remaining in the scoring period and Bazzana mired in a 2-for-16 slump over the last week, expectations should be tempered, but his category-juice in runs and steals makes him too valuable to bench.
