Cam Smith’s elite power surge provides a much-needed boost for the Astros

Smith has found his power stroke lately, blasting three home runs over his last seven games while maintaining his role as the everyday right fielder for the third-place Astros (43-46). Although he recently gave fantasy managers a scare after fouling a ball off his foot, he has avoided the injured list, which is crucial for a Houston lineup currently missing both Jeremy Pena and Carlos Correa. He continues to flash elite exit velocity, including a recent 110-mph blast that underscores his physical maturation.

Under the hood, Smith has already eclipsed our season projection of 10 home runs, currently sitting at 11 on the year through 87 games. While his .223 batting average remains a significant drag in standard formats, his underlying power metrics—highlighted by multiple 450-foot shots—suggest this power surge is a legitimate step forward rather than a fluke. Expect the batting average to remain a risk given his career baseline, but his status as a dual power-speed threat with nine steals makes him highly valuable.

The weekend ahead is challenging as the Astros host a first-place Rays squad for a three-game set. Smith faces elite resistance from Nick Martinez (2.66 ERA) and Drew Rasmussen (2.45 ERA), both of whom boast exceptional WHIPs that limit base runners. Sunday offers a slightly more manageable matchup against Griffin Jax, but the overall difficulty of the opposing rotation limits his floor this week. Despite the tough matchups, Smith’s elite barrel rates and current hot streak make him difficult to bench. Start.
