Edwin Diaz nears highly anticipated return following successful rehab start
Diaz is on the verge of returning to the first-place Dodgers after a lengthy recovery from elbow surgery to remove loose bodies. While he has been sidelined since late April, he looked sharp in his rehab debut on July 11, striking out two batters. The Dodgers are currently 61-36 and leading the NL West but are looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Currently, Tanner Scott is serving as the primary closer, but Diaz is expected to reclaim a high-leverage role immediately upon his activation.
Our projection anticipates a strong second half for the veteran, with a 3.09 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over the remainder of the season. This aligns with his elite 2025 form where he posted a dominant 1.71 ERA and 0.90 WHIP with 28 saves. Although his seven appearances earlier this year were rocky before the elbow issue was addressed, his career strikeout rate of over 13 per nine innings suggests the early-season struggle was an injury-related outlier rather than a decline in skill.
The Dodgers have three games scheduled this week, all on the road against the Yankees beginning July 17. Our weekly model projects Diaz for 1.2 saves and four strikeouts over 3.2 innings, indicating he may be activated as soon as this weekend. While managers should wait for official confirmation of his return to the active roster before starting him, he is a mandatory hold in all formats as he prepares to rejoin one of the most productive bullpens in the league. Verdict: Hold.
