Mike Burrows optioned to the minors after a string of disastrous starts

Burrows was officially optioned to the minors on July 7 following a catastrophic outing against the Nationals where he surrendered seven earned runs and nine hits in just 4.1 innings. The third-place Astros, who currently sit at 46-49, decided a change was necessary as his season ERA climbed to a bloated 6.11. Despite several rotation injuries to players like Lance McCullers Jr., Burrows has lost his grip on a primary starter role due to extreme inconsistency and poor command.

The underlying metrics suggest this season-long struggle is a significant deviation from his career baseline and previous potential. After posting a respectable 4.06 ERA in 2025, his WHIP has ballooned to 1.58 this year as he struggles with a lowered arm slot that has significantly sapped the effectiveness of his four-seam fastball. Our models suggest that until he recaptures his vertical release point and stabilizes his mechanics in Triple-A, he will continue to be a major liability for fantasy rosters.

With the week already underway and Burrows now off the active roster, he will not participate in the remaining series against the division-rival Rangers.
