Matthew Liberatore presents high risk during a daunting two-start road week

Liberatore is currently in a tailspin, posting a staggering 15.71 ERA and 2.70 WHIP over his last two starts. The third-place Cardinals, who sit at 43-38, have kept him in the rotation as a staff anchor following Dustin May's back injury, but he has been prone to disastrous innings. This was most evident in a recent outing where he was chased early after surrendering a flurry of extra-base hits.

While his 2026 ratios are bloated at a 5.75 ERA and 1.64 WHIP, our models project him to finish the season closer to a 4.44 ERA with 100 strikeouts. Earlier this year, he flashed mid-rotation potential with a career-high nine strikeouts, showing his curveball can be a dominant weapon. However, his current lack of consistency and high hit rate make him a major ratio risk rather than a fantasy stabilizer.

This is a two-start week for the lefty, but the matchups are difficult. He faces the Braves and Martin Perez, who enters with a strong 3.00 ERA, before taking on the Cubs and Shota Imanaga's elite 1.05 WHIP. While the volume of a two-start week is usually tempting, our projection of a 7.50 ERA for the period and his recent form suggest he will do more damage to your roster than good. Sit.
