Paul Skenes looking to reclaim elite form during high-stakes two-start week

Skenes has hit an uncharacteristic rough patch, posting a 15.75 ERA and 2.00 WHIP over the last seven days after a career-worst outing where he surrendered seven earned runs. The fourth-place Pirates, currently 46-45, have struggled to provide defensive support for their staff anchor, who remains healthy despite recent viral speculation regarding his mechanics and velocity. He continues to lead the rotation as the primary starter for a club navigating several injuries to its pitching staff.

These recent blow-ups are a far cry from his season projection of a 2.20 ERA and 1.00 WHIP, suggesting that a significant positive correction is imminent. While his current 3.67 ERA is higher than his elite 2025 mark of 1.99, his 11.2 K/9 and dominant 5.41 K/BB ratio prove his pure stuff remains among the best in the game.
