Paul Skenes navigates recent velocity dips while maintaining elite strikeout upside

Skenes serves as the staff anchor for the fourth-place Pirates (63-66), who have won two straight despite rotation injuries like Mitch Keller's arm ailment. Over his last 30 days, the right-hander has hit a rough patch with a 6.59 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across five starts amid ongoing scrutiny over a slight drop in fastball velocity. In his outing on August 19 against Detroit, he yielded three earned runs across 4.1 innings while striking out five.

While his current 4.01 ERA is elevated compared to our 2.20 season projection and his sub-2.00 career marks, his swing-and-miss stuff remains elite with 171 strikeouts and an 11.24 K/9. Mechanical adjustments to address a cross-body delivery should help curb his recent walk issues, making this second-half bump a temporary hiccup rather than a long-term decline.
