Konnor Griffin's breakout rookie campaign on hold due to severe finger injury

Griffin was arguably the hottest rookie in baseball before disaster struck, slashing .385 with four steals over his final three active games. The fourth-place Pirates (50-47) were forced to place their star shortstop on the 60-day IL on July 7 following a torn tendon in his left ring finger. With an 8-10 week recovery timeline, his everyday role is currently being filled by Jared Triolo while Griffin begins a lengthy splinting and rehab process.

The timing is devastating for fantasy managers, as Griffin was validating his elite pedigree with a .276 average and 20 steals through just 59 career games. Our models projected a .257 average and 23 steals for the year, marks he was easily on pace to shatter given his elite sprint speed and growing comfort at the plate. While his .306 average over the last 30 days appeared sustainable, this injury represents a total shutdown of his fantasy utility for the remainder of the summer.

Pittsburgh heads to Cleveland this weekend to face a solid rotation featuring Gavin Williams and Tanner Bibee, but Griffin will remain sidelined for the duration of the series. Facing a group of pitchers with ERAs hovering near 3.80 would have been a great test for the 20-year-old, but the focus now shifts entirely to his long-term health. Since he is not expected back until September at the earliest, managers in redraft formats should pivot to other middle infield options. Sit.
