Cristian Javier transitions to the bullpen as control issues persist

Javier has struggled significantly since returning from a shoulder strain that sidelined him back in April. Over his last 14 days, he has posted a 6.00 ERA and a bloated 2.17 WHIP across three appearances as the team transitions him into a relief role. The third-place Astros currently sit at 47-51 and are utilizing Javier as a typical reliever to help stabilize a staff that has been hit hard by injuries to several key starters.

Under the hood, the right-hander's strikeout stuff remains elite, evidenced by a 12.00 K/9 over his last six innings of work. However, this high-octane production is being negated by extreme volatility, as his current season ERA sits in the double digits with a career-worst walk rate. While our data originally projected a 4.50 ERA as a rotation staple, his move to the bullpen is a necessary real-world adjustment that severely caps his fantasy volume for the remainder of the season.

The week ahead is brief for Houston, consisting of just a three-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles following the mid-summer break.
