Cade Smith | Fantasy Outlook

May's AL Reliever of the Month continues to dominate as Cleveland's premier closing weapon.

Cade Smith is firmly established as the primary closer for the first-place Cleveland Guardians, who hold a 36-27 record in the AL Central. With elite reliever Emmanuel Clase sidelined on the restricted list, Smith has completely seized the high-leverage role and was recently named the AL Reliever of the Month. Over his last 14 days, Smith has been excellent, posting a 0.80 WHIP with eight strikeouts over five frames.

The right-hander's breakout is fully supported by his underlying metrics, having already secured 21 saves on the year. This stellar run is no fluke, as his current 13.72 K/9 rate is in line with his high-strikeout career baselines from the previous two seasons. Expect his ratios to remain elite as he easily outpaces our original season projection of 23 saves.

Cleveland currently rides a two-game winning streak into the remainder of their road trip, offering plenty of late-game utility. The Guardians wrap up in New York before heading to Texas to face Kumar Rocker (3.54 ERA) and Jack Leiter (4.50 ERA). These close matchups should yield multiple save opportunities. Start him with complete confidence.
