Matt Chapman remains out for the season following core muscle surgery

Chapman has logged no recent games after undergoing season-ending surgery in mid-August to repair a torn core muscle and hernia. He officially remains on the 60-day injured list, leaving Shay Whitcomb to handle everyday third base duties for a fourth-place Giants club that sits at 62-85 on a three-game winning streak. With San Francisco already eliminated from postseason contention, the organization is focused on giving younger bats extended looks down the stretch.

Across 84 appearances before his shutdown, the veteran slashed .234/.327/.368 with just seven home runs, well off the pace of his usual 20-homer power established throughout his career. It was revealed that he had battled the core muscle ailment since April, which heavily sapped his power output and led to diminished extra-base production. Any hope for late-season value has been extinguished by his extended rehabilitation timeline.

The Giants close out the week with three remaining home games against the Padres, facing a tough rotation featuring Robbie Ray and Michael King. Chapman will not take the field again this year, meaning fantasy managers in all redraft leagues should cut ties and clear the roster spot immediately: Drop.
