Anthony Molina steps into a rotation opportunity in St. Louis despite lingering ratio volatility

Molina has been thrust into starting duties for a depleted Giants pitching staff missing several arms to the injured list. While he opened eyes with strong early impressions in San Francisco, his latest outing was disastrous, surrendering seven earned runs over three frames to push his 14-day ERA to 6.92. The fourth-place Giants, currently 62-88 and mired in a three-game skid, continue to rely on the young righty out of necessity.

The right-hander has flashed intriguing swing-and-miss stuff with 16 strikeouts over his past 13 innings, yet his career 7.00-plus ERA and our projected 4.71 mark underscore persistent baseline concerns. Even though his 1.23 WHIP across the last 30 days reflects better command, his susceptibility to loud contact means blowups are always lurking right beneath the surface.

Molina takes the mound Wednesday for a single road start in St. Louis opposite Matthew Liberatore, who brings an elevated 5.62 ERA and 1.50 WHIP into the matchup. While our models project a workable 3.93 ERA across 5.2 frames, the explosive downside makes him an unnecessary gamble outside of desperate deep-league chasing. Sit.
