Bryan Baker | Fantasy Outlook

Bryan Baker enters the second half as an elite closing option for the first-place Rays

Baker has been nearly untouchable lately, posting a flawless 0.00 ERA and a 0.50 WHIP over his last 14 days while adding to his save total. The first-place Rays, who lead the AL East with a 56-38 record, have firmly entrenched him as their primary closer. He is coming off a massive confidence booster after earning his first career All-Star selection and recording the final out for the American League earlier this week.

While our early-season models were conservative, Baker's current 1.78 ERA and 0.85 WHIP through 35.4 innings are a stark improvement over his career baselines. With 25 saves already under his belt, he has clearly found a home in the high-leverage hierarchy. His 10.42 K/9 indicates this production is sustainable, though his ERA could eventually see a slight rise if his elite strand rate experiences any natural regression.

The Rays head to Boston for a four-game series where our projection sees Baker contributing nearly two saves. The Red Sox will feature strong starting pitching from Jake Bennett and Sonny Gray, who carries a stellar 2.54 ERA, likely leading to the close, low-scoring games where Baker thrives. Given his current form and the team's ability to create save situations, he is a mandatory lineup lock. Start.
