Junior Caminero’s historic power surge makes him a must-start despite a recent dip in average

Caminero is the everyday third baseman for the first-place Rays, who currently lead the AL East with a 56-38 record. He has been on an absolute tear, launching 14 home runs over the last 30 days, though his batting average has cooled to .160 over the past week as strikeouts have ticked up. Despite the recent swing-and-miss, his role as a middle-of-the-order force is cemented, especially after being named the AL starter at the hot corner for the All-Star game.

While his .200 average over the last two weeks suggests some regression, our models indicate that his underlying plate discipline has actually improved this year, with his out-of-zone swing rate dropping to 28.3%. He has already hit 28 home runs this season, putting him well on pace to exceed our season projection of 34 total homers.
