Jeff Hoffman stabilizes ratios while settling into high-leverage setup role

Hoffman has turned a corner lately, posting a sharp 1.70 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over his last 30 days of work. While he lost the primary closing job earlier this season to Louis Varland, he remains a vital high-leverage arm for a fifth-place Blue Jays squad currently sitting at 45-51. Despite the team's recent two-game losing streak, he continues to see consistent usage in the late innings, currently slotting in as the top setup option in the Toronto bullpen.

Under the hood, Hoffman’s strikeout profile remains elite, as he is currently fanning more than 15 batters per nine innings. While his 1.60 WHIP for the season is significantly higher than our projected 1.14 mark, his recent form suggests his historic bad luck with balls in play is finally normalizing. We expect his season-long ERA to continue gravitating toward our 3.57 projection as he moves further away from a difficult month of May.

The Blue Jays have a quiet start to the week before hosting a three-game weekend series against the White Sox. With three appearances projected for the week, Hoffman is a strong source of strikeouts and holds, especially facing a Chicago lineup that has struggled to generate consistent offense. Because he is no longer the undisputed source of saves, his value is highest in leagues that reward holds or high-K relief depth. Hold.
