Mick Abel's season is over following right elbow surgery

Mick Abel’s 2026 campaign has reached a premature conclusion after he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow following a late-June setback. The 24-year-old right-hander has been a fixture on the injured list for the third-place Twins, who currently sit at 48-49 and three games out of first in the division. With Abel shifted to the 60-day injured list, Minnesota will continue to lean on a rotation led by Joe Ryan and Bailey Ober.

Before the injury, Abel provided a glimpse of his high-strikeout potential, fanning 23 batters across 20.1 innings with a 4.03 ERA. While his 1.59 WHIP through four starts was significantly higher than our season projection of 1.41, his ability to generate swings and misses was an asset. However, with the career-high strikeout rates now sidelined by surgery, his path toward matching our projection of 90 strikeouts has vanished for the current season.

The Twins travel to Chicago this weekend for a three-game series against the Cubs, but Abel is non-existent on the weekly projection as he begins his long-term recovery. He will face a lengthy rehab process with zero chance of contributing to fantasy rosters for the remainder of the year. Given the definitive nature of his elbow procedure, he should be cleared from rosters in all redraft formats to make room for active starters. Drop.
