Will Vest nears return to Tigers' bullpen following successful rehab assignment

Vest is currently on the injured list with right elbow inflammation but appears close to a return after throwing a perfect rehab inning for Triple-A Toledo. The fourth-place Tigers, currently sitting at 44-52, have missed his high-leverage presence in a bullpen where Kenley Jansen currently handles the primary closing duties. Before his late June sideline, Vest had managed two saves and seven holds in 27 appearances, though his command was uncharacteristically shaky.

While his 6.54 ERA and 1.62 WHIP through 23.4 innings this year are concerning, they represent a significant departure from his 2.55 ERA during a 2025 breakout campaign. Our data remains optimistic, projecting a 3.22 ERA and 1.18 WHIP for the rest of the season, suggesting that the forearm issues likely hindered his effectiveness. Fantasy managers should expect his strikeout rate to stabilize back toward his career average of nearly 10.4 K/9 once he regains his rhythm.

Detroit concludes their week with a three-game series against the Angels in Anaheim starting Friday. While reports suggest Vest could be reinstated as early as Sunday’s series finale, he is unlikely to provide immediate fantasy impact this week given the very limited window for appearances. With the team likely easing him back into a high-leverage role, it is best to leave him on the bench or in an IL spot until he proves his health in live action. Sit.
