Kodai Senga's late-inning bullpen struggles make him a fantasy liability down the stretch

Senga's rough stretch in relief continued recently, logging a 14.52 ERA and 3.23 WHIP over 3.1 innings across his last 14 days, including a high-profile blown save against Pete Alonso. Currently serving out of the bullpen as a long reliever and high-leverage arm, he faces limited high-leverage stability for a fifth-place Mets squad (71-85) that is eliminated from postseason contention. Even with primary closer Daniel Duarte sidelined on the injured list, Senga's wildness keeps his ninth-inning leash extremely short.

Under the hood, Senga's turbulent 2026 campaign (7.85 ERA, 1.76 WHIP) has fallen far short of our projected 3.76 ERA baseline. While his strikeout stuff remains intact with 13 punchouts over 9.2 innings in the last 30 days, issuing 41 walks across 57.3 total frames confirms that his mechanical and control issues are an entrenched reality rather than bad luck.

New York travels for six road games against the Rangers and Nationals this week, with Senga completely absent from the projected starting rotation. Without guaranteed saves or starting pitcher volume, his volatile ratios make him too dangerous to roster in the season's closing stages. Sit.
